--- ## Description The Allan M. Smillie Scholarship is awarded annually by the Ohio Valley Member Chapter of the Association for Iron and Steel Technology Foundation (AIST). This scholarship aims to encourage and support students who are pursuing careers in fields related to the iron and steel industry, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. The program is part of a broader initiative by AIST to develop future professionals for the steel industry through local chapter-based scholarships. --- ## Due Dates - April 30, 2026: Completed application deadline (applications are due annually by April 30). _All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates._ --- ## Funding Amount - The Allan M. Smillie Scholarship provides a one-time award of $5,000. - Only one scholarship is awarded per year through the Ohio Valley Member Chapter. - The scholarship is paid as a lump sum directly to the recipient's educational institution. --- ## Eligibility - Applicants must be the child (including step-children, adopted children, or wards) of a member in good standing of the AIST Ohio Valley Member Chapter, or an AIST Student member in good standing. - The applicant must be accepted into, planning to attend, or currently enrolled in a full-time curriculum at an accredited university, college, or technical training center within the chapter area. - The course of study should be directly related to the production, support, or management of iron and steel manufacturing and distribution. - STEM Bachelor of Science degrees are preferred, but related Bachelor of Arts or Associate of Science degrees in STEM-related technology are also eligible. - Recipients may reapply each year but can only win one scholarship per year. --- ## Application Process Applicants must submit the following by the deadline: - A current resume detailing work experience and extracurricular activities, highlighting leadership positions. - An essay (maximum two pages) outlining professional goals, interest in the steel industry, and how the applicant's skills could benefit the industry. - A recommendation or evaluation from a counselor, teacher, or professor. - A copy of current high school or college transcripts. - Complete the application form available on the [AIST Ohio Valley Member Chapter Scholarship page](https://www.aist.org/students-faculty/scholarships/member-chapter-scholarships/ohio-valley/application).
