    Description

The Alpha-1 Foundation’s 2026–2027 In-Cycle Grants Award Program supports meritorious scientific research designed to improve the health of people with alpha-1 antitrypsin (AAT) deficiency, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure. It encourages novel concepts that deepen understanding of AAT expression and the pathogenesis and management of deficiency-related disease. Research grants support standard proposals and collaborations between two principal investigators, with a team science approach encouraged for collaborative projects.

The Foundation’s research mission encompasses basic, translational, and clinical work on Alpha-1-related lung and liver disease, as well as ethical, legal, and social issues affecting people with genetic conditions. Its research agenda includes therapeutic development, screening and diagnosis, natural history, clinical outcomes, and development of the Alpha-1 research workforce.
