Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (AΩA) runs this fellowship to foster the next generation of medical researchers. Established in 1982, the program emphasizes student-designed and student-initiated projects carried out with an academic mentor. Supported fields include clinical investigation, basic laboratory research, epidemiology, social science/health services research, leadership, and professionalism.
The fellowship encourages scientific and scholarly discovery and a deeper critical understanding of scholarship and research in health care and science. Projects take place over 2–12 months, with at least 240 hours devoted to research. Fellowship funds are expected to be the student’s primary source of research support. The award also supports travel to present fellowship results at a national meeting or conference.
