Amazon Research Awards (ARA) supports academic institutions and nonprofits developing ways to assess and improve AI across underrepresented languages and cultural contexts. The call advances Amazon’s New Delhi Frontier AI Impact Commitments, prioritizing the Global South and evaluation infrastructure that does not yet exist at scale. Responsible safety and fairness evaluation, with human judgment in the loop, is central to identifying harms that standard benchmarks may miss.
Supported work includes low-resource language benchmarks for translation, question answering, summarization, and conversational AI; culturally sensitive evaluation incorporating local norms, community feedback, and Indigenous knowledge; and multilingual testing tools and pipelines. Research on deployment in emerging economies may examine usage patterns, infrastructure constraints, and adoption in healthcare, agriculture, education, financial services, and public administration. Related interests include synthetic data, cross-lingual transfer evaluation, responsible AI, and evaluation capacity building.
