Its priorities include foregrounding underrepresented artists and cultures, reconsidering accepted histories, and engaging diverse collaborators and communities. The program primarily addresses visual arts of the United States and its occupied territories, spanning pre-modern, modern, and contemporary art, Indigenous expressions that cross national borders, and global diasporic narratives. Loan Exhibition Grants fund special exhibitions with significant loans and new scholarship, alongside exhibition catalogues and public programming. --- ## Description The Henry Luce Foundation’s American Art Program supports innovative visual arts projects that help museums tell new stories and serve as open forums for dialogue about the United States. It prioritizes underrepresented artists and cultures, reconsideration of accepted histories, and engagement with diverse collaborators and communities. Its scope primarily covers visual arts of the United States and its occupied territories, including pre-modern, modern, and contemporary art, Indigenous expressions crossing national borders, and global diasporic narratives. Loan Exhibition Grants support special exhibitions involving significant loans and new scholarship. Responsive Grants support collection-based exhibitions, reinstallations, publications, research and digital resources, conservation, archives, symposia, fellowships, term positions, and other field-advancing initiatives outside the loan exhibition category. Exhibition catalogues and public programming can receive support, as can institutional staffing opportunities where mentorship capacity exists. --- ## Due Dates - April 24, 2027: Loan Exhibition Grants Concept Note deadline. - June 26, 2027: Loan Exhibition Grants invited full proposal deadline. - Rolling: Responsive Grants applications (reviewed throughout the year). The loan exhibition competition runs annually. General Foundation Concept Notes are reviewed within eight weeks, with application-status emails within 8–12 weeks. Proposal development generally takes at least 3–4 months, and recommended proposals reach the board in March, June, and November. --- ## Funding Amount Foundation-wide grants range from $10,000 to $1,000,000, depending on program and project scope. The Foundation regularly makes multi-year awards and considers renewals case by case, based on scope, performance, and impact. - **Responsive Grants:** Request an amount appropriate to the project’s scale, scope, and budget. - **Partial support:** Responsive Grants may fund a single component of a larger project. - **Matching funds:** Responsive Grants require no match (additional financial support is encouraged). - **Loan Exhibition Grants:** Support the overall project, including publications, programs, and all tour presentations. - **Indirect costs:** Up to 20% of the total grant amount, determined by the Program Director. Include indirect costs in the proposal: grants are not increased retroactively to cover them. --- ## Eligibility Eligible applicants must: - Apply as an institution, not an individual or individual artist. - Be a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit, or meet the international nonprofit requirements below. - Advance the study, presentation, understanding, or interpretation of American art and visual culture. - Designate one lead organization to administer a collaborative Responsive Grant. - Apply through the originating institution for a touring loan exhibition. Eligible partners include museums, universities and other academic institutions, libraries, archives, other cultural institutions, and non-collecting arts organizations organizing visual art exhibitions or advancing art historical scholarship. Any organization may submit a Concept Note regardless of location. Invited international nonprofits need a U.S. 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor or an NGOsource equivalency determination. Additional requirements: - Loan exhibitions must involve substantial external loans and present meaningful new scholarship. - Exhibitions relying more than 50% on one permanent or sole collection are typically ineligible. - Exhibitions without external loans are typically ineligible. - Newly commissioned works should comprise no more than approximately 50% of the exhibition checklist. A single lender, collection, or estate may supply less than 50% of the checklist without automatic disqualification. Broader lender representation may be viewed more favorably. Publications are not strictly required, and touring exhibitions are eligible and often encouraged. The program does not fund performance art, film (including documentaries), video art, dance, theatrical performances, art creation or purchases, or work by emerging artists. It does not underwrite commissioned or site-specific works, although loan exhibitions may include newly commissioned works within the limit above. Organizations may seek multiple Responsive Grants for unrelated projects. Those with an active Luce grant should contact the Program Director before seeking another in the same area. Applications to a different program category are welcome. Funding categories: - **Loan Exhibition Grants:** Institutions presenting scholarly special exhibitions with significant loans. - **Responsive Grants:** Institutions pursuing scholarly and field-advancing initiatives outside the loan exhibition category. --- ## Application Process - **Submission:** Create an account and submit through the [online grants portal](https://hluce.my.site.com/s/). - **Stages:** Unsolicited Concept Note, followed by a full proposal only if invited. - **Concept Note:** Include the program requested, project summary, and desired funding amount. - Loan exhibitions: Project description and curatorial concept. - Preliminary checklist, potential lenders, estimated number of works, and anticipated exhibition dates. - Publication or tour information, if applicable, preliminary budget, and funding request. - **Full proposal:** Invited loan exhibition applicants submit the following: - Detailed exhibition description and full project budget. - Checklist as complete as possible, lender information, and images of included works. - Publication and tour plans, if applicable (available partner venues and schedules). - **Evaluation:** Luce staff review Concept Notes and assess scholarly significance and feasibility. - Loan exhibitions: Innovation, rigor, engagement, collaboration, partnerships, and impact on field, audiences, and communities. - Full exhibition proposals receive staff and external art-historian and museum-curator review. - Responsive Grants: Scholarly significance, originality, field advancement, and clear goals, methodology, and outcomes. - Responsive Grants: Realistic budget, institutional commitment, and capacity to complete the work. - **Assistance:** Contact the grants administrator for portal registration or Concept Note submission difficulties. --- ## Additional Information Pre-application meetings and Concept Note or proposal-writing assistance are not available. Unsuccessful applicants may reapply for the same grant once per year, submit exhibition Concept Notes in future competitions, or apply with future Responsive Grant projects. Foundation exclusions also cover: - Healthcare, medical initiatives, disaster relief, and international development. - Political parties, campaigns, lobbying, and other political activities. - Annual funds, fundraising events, endowments, and building campaigns. Recent 2026 American Art awards include: - Japanese American National Museum: $150,000. - Albright College: $100,000. - Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art: $270,000. - Bates College Museum of Art: $258,000. --- ## External Links - [American Art program](https://hluce.org/programs/american-art) - [Loan Exhibition Grants guidelines and FAQs](https://hluce.org/programs/american-art/draft-american-art-exhibition-grants/) - [Responsive Grants guidelines and FAQs](https://hluce.org/programs/american-art/american-art-responsive-grants/) - [American Art program scope](https://hluce.org/programs/american-art/american-art-our-scope/) - [Foundation application guidelines and FAQs](https://hluce.org/apply-for-a-grant/) --- ## Contact Information | Contact | Email | Phone | Webpage | |---|---|---|---| | Randall Griffey, Program Director, American Art | | | [Staff page](https://hluce.org/about/staff/randall-griffey/) | | Jackie Edwards, Program Officer, American Art | | | [Staff page](https://hluce.org/about/staff/jackie-edwards/) | | Grants administrator (portal assistance) | grants@hluce.org | | | | Henry Luce Foundation, general inquiries | info@hluce.org | 212-489-7700 | [Contact page](https://www.hluce.org/contact/) |76:Tb0e,## Grant Eligibility Requirements ### Organization Type - Grants are made only to institutions/organizations; individual researchers and individual artists cannot apply directly. - Applicant must be a U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization or an international equivalent. - Eligible organization types include museums, universities and other academic institutions, libraries, archives, other cultural institutions, and non-collecting arts organizations that organize visual art exhibitions or advance art historical scholarship. ### Geographic/Institutional - Any organization may submit a Concept Note regardless of geographic location. - A non-U.S. nonprofit invited to submit a full proposal must either (a) have a U.S. fiscal sponsor with 501(c)(3) status, or (b) complete an equivalency determination through NGOsource (a service that verifies a foreign organization's charitable status is equivalent to U.S. 501(c)(3)). ### Prior Funding / Proposal Limits - An organization may apply for more than one Luce grant at a time, provided the projects are unrelated. - An organization that already holds an active Luce Foundation grant should contact the appropriate Program Director before applying for a second grant in the same program area; applying to a different program category is permitted. - Unsuccessful applicants may reapply for the same grant once per year. ### Other Eligibility Requirements - Full proposals are submitted by invitation only, following an unsolicited Concept Note. Submitting a Concept Note does not require an invitation. - Collaborative Responsive Grant projects must designate one organization as the lead applicant responsible for administering the grant. - For a touring loan exhibition, only the originating institution may apply for support. - Loan exhibition projects must involve substantial external loans (from multiple institutional and/or private collections) and present meaningful new scholarship. Exhibitions that rely more than 50% on one permanent or sole collection, or that involve no external loans, are typically ineligible. - Newly commissioned works may make up no more than approximately 50% of the exhibition checklist. A single lender, collection, or estate supplying less than 50% of the checklist does not automatically disqualify a project. - The American Art Program does not fund performance art, film (including documentaries), video art, dance, theatrical performances, art creation or purchases, or the work of emerging artists. It also does not underwrite commissioned or site-specific works. - Foundation-wide exclusions: no support for healthcare/medical initiatives, disaster relief, or international development; political parties, campaigns, lobbying, or other political activities; or annual funds, fundraising events, endowments, or building campaigns.77:T10e0,Funder: Henry Luce Foundation Due Dates: April 24, 2027 (Loan Exhibition Concept Note) | June 26, 2027 (Invited Full Proposal) | Rolling (Responsive Grants) Funding Amounts: Foundation-wide grants: $10,000–$1,000,000; multi-year awards available Summary: Supports exhibitions and scholarly initiatives that advance American art, foreground underrepresented artists and cultures, and challenge accepted histories.
