This two-year award supports clinical research and training in epilepsy for clinicians who are fellows or new faculty pursuing careers in patient-oriented research. It honors Susan S. Spencer, MD, an internationally renowned epileptologist. The American Brain Foundation administers the grant, jointly funded with the American Epilepsy Society and Epilepsy Foundation.
Eligible work includes research with human participants and translational research specifically designed to develop treatments, improve diagnosis, or enhance clinical care for people with epilepsy. Topics include epidemiologic and behavioral studies, clinical trials, clinically relevant disease mechanisms, health services and outcomes research, quality improvement, and clinical applications of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence. The program encourages research with relevance beyond epilepsy, reflecting the Foundation’s “Cure One, Cure Many” philosophy, while developing independent researchers through mentorship and training.
