Funder: American Foundry Society
Due Dates: Rolling (proposals) | At least one week before quarterly Research Board meetings (board consideration)
Funding Amounts: Project-specific funding requests; overhead must be waived or capped at 22.5%
Summary: Supports metalcasting research that advances industry quality, efficiency, safety, and technical innovation.
Key Information: All projects require approval and sponsorship from the relevant AFS technical committee and division.
The American Foundry Society (AFS) sponsors research to improve the quality, efficiency, safety, and technical innovation of the metalcasting industry. Its research program seeks to remove technical barriers and knowledge gaps, develop new technologies, improve understanding of basic casting issues, and benchmark best practices. Direct research funding comes from a portion of AFS Corporate Member dues, with the AFS Research Board selecting projects and overseeing the work.
Most projects originate within AFS technical committees, but outside researchers and universities may also propose research. These proposals are routed to the relevant technical committee for review and sponsorship. The program emphasizes practical industry benefits: transferring results to the foundry floor, improving foundry competitiveness, or expanding markets and applications for metal castings. Researchers work with industry steering committees to guide projects toward useful outcomes.
