    Description

The Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship supports the advancement and completion of a doctoral dissertation on a topic other than the art of Europe or the United States. Cross-cultural topics are encouraged when at least one area of focus explores a culture beyond European and U.S. traditions. Supported by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the fellowship is administered by the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, the National Gallery of Art’s research institute.

One 24-month fellowship is awarded annually. The fellow is expected to spend the first year conducting dissertation research abroad and the second year in residence at the Center completing the dissertation. During residency, fellows participate in lectures, colloquia, and discussions with the Center’s scholarly community and maintain regular contact with its professors and other fellows.
