The Virginia Museum of History & Culture offers the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship Program to promote the interpretation of Virginia history and access to its collections. Funded by a matching grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and gifts from individuals, the fellowships help defray travel expenses for one- to two-week research visits to the museum’s library.
The program supports the broad sweep of Virginia and American history, including political, constitutional, religious, military, and Black studies; business and economic history and labor relations; gender, women’s, and LGBTQ+ studies; and social, cultural, and literature studies. These subjects are not exhaustive. Proposals should demonstrate their relevance through specific sources in the museum’s collections. Research promising significant publication, including in the Virginia Magazine of History & Biography, receives primary consideration.
