The Animal Welfare Institute’s Christine Stevens Wildlife Awards support research that develops humane, nonlethal tools and techniques for managing conflicts between people and wildlife and improves methods of wildlife study. The program funds efforts to devise new strategies and test existing products, responding to conflicts associated with habitat destruction and degradation, urban and suburban sprawl, and invasive species.
Studies using new methodologies or innovative applications of existing technologies are particularly welcome. Funded work has included noninvasive genetic sampling, acoustic monitoring, wildlife identification tools, and nonlethal approaches to conflicts involving predators, beavers, and other animals. Named for AWI’s late founder and president for more than 50 years, the awards aim to inspire a new generation of compassionate wildlife scientists, managers, and advocates.
