The Franco Institute at the University of Notre Dame supports scholarly engagement with annual research themes of timely and enduring importance to society. Its 2026–2027 theme, Interdependence, complements the ND Arts Biennial theme of “symbiosis.” The grant invites research and creative projects examining relationships among species, communities, ideas, and economies, past and present, with contributions to scholarship, society, or both.
The theme considers how awareness of a shared plight and fate can foster meaningful connections, and how recognizing interdependence with all living creatures can provide a basis for love and compassion. It also distinguishes connection from assimilation, inviting consideration of solidarity without requiring sameness. Funding supports materials and services directly needed to complete the proposed work.
