    Description

The Anton Hales Medal is an early-career honorific award administered by the Australian Academy of Science. It recognises outstanding contributions to research in the Earth sciences and honours the late Professor Anton L Hales FAA, founding director of the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University. The medal recognises research achievement rather than supporting a specified research project, and may be awarded annually.

The research recognised spans solid Earth structure and dynamics, geological history, climate extremes, atmospheric chemistry, oceans, groundwater, volcanology and fossil records. Previous recipients have connected surface changes with processes deep within Earth, developed new geochronology and seismic imaging methods, and advanced understanding of climate risk and coastal water quality. Scientific achievement is the primary selection criterion, assessed relative to the candidate’s opportunities to conduct research.
