The A.P. Giannini Foundation supports physician-scientists and junior researchers conducting innovative research in the basic sciences and applied fields. Projects should advance the translation of biomedical science into preventions, treatments, and cures for human diseases. The fellowship combines research salary support with professional development to help fellows become established investigators and pursue scientific leadership in academia, industry, the public sector, and non-traditional career pathways.
Fellows participate in an integrated communications and leadership program as a learning community. First-year training culminates in a research overview video; second-year activities include leadership workshops, a two-day retreat, and individual coaching. In the third year, fellows meet with Scientific Advisory Committee members and alumni for career-transition discussions, including starting a laboratory, managing teams, and preparing chalk talks.
