The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) Social Sciences in PD Research Grant supports research on the social dimensions of Parkinson’s disease. People with Parkinson’s and their care partners may experience stigma, isolation, and a lack of accessible support networks. These challenges can increase the burden of disease and diminish quality of life. The program complements APDA’s broader investment in understanding Parkinson’s disease and finding a cure.
The grant welcomes work from sociology, psychology, public health, health communication, social work, health policy and management, gerontology, rehabilitation science, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other fields studying social issues related to Parkinson’s. APDA describes the program as its fifth grant category. Proposals undergo competitive review and scoring by its Scientific Advisory Board, whose members have nationally recognized expertise in Parkinson’s research.
