The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) runs an annual Applied Research Competition to support pilot studies with practical relevance to autistic people and their families. The program funds work that produces usable, objective findings, supports evidence-based practice, and has the potential to influence public policy or improve everyday quality of life. Its scope includes assessment, intervention, service delivery, education, communication, family support, community integration, and adult services across the lifespan.
OAR’s Scientific Council and reviewers from the autism community evaluate proposals through letters of intent, full proposals, and final selection. The Board of Directors approves awards based on their recommendations and OAR’s research priorities. The program emphasizes meaningful outcomes that can be applied beyond the research setting, rather than basic research or knowledge generation without a practical purpose.
