Summary: ARC funds translational research and partnerships to predict, prevent, and prepare for catastrophic climate risks and tipping points.
Advanced Research for Climate Emergencies (ARC), an initiative of Renaissance Philanthropy, supports expert-led, mission-driven translational research and development addressing catastrophic climate risks. Its work focuses on threats such as polar ice sheet collapse, methane feedback loops, ocean current destabilization, and ecosystem collapse. ARC aims to bridge breakthrough science and societal needs, giving decision-makers scientifically sound options for potential climate emergencies.
ARC’s four focus areas are preventing catastrophic sea level rise, mitigating climate overshoot, restoring ocean balance and ecosystems, and building resilience for climate emergencies. It supports integrated approaches that consider social, ecological, geopolitical, and technical complexity, drawing on scientific, engineering, social, political, legal, and environmental expertise. Its role is to support research, risk assessment, and governance—not to advocate deployment of specific interventions.
