--- ## Description The fellowship supports a wide range of activities related to the archaeology of Portugal, including its Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira. Eligible projects include excavations, research projects, colloquia, symposia, publications, and travel for research or academic presentations. Portuguese nationals (archaeologists and archaeology graduate students) may also use the fellowship to support research and study in the US on any archaeological region or topic, not limited to Portuguese archaeology. The goal is to foster international collaboration and advance archaeological knowledge of Portugal's rich heritage. --- ## Due Dates - **Full application deadline (anticipated):** November 2026 *All dates are projected based on the annual cycle; check the program page for updates.* --- ## Funding Amount - **Maximum award:** Up to $6,000 - **Duration:** Typically for one year (July 1 – June 30) - **Restrictions:** Funds may not be used for institutional overhead, administrative recovery, or indirect costs. Allowable expenses include travel, research costs, equipment, and dependent/elder care (if justified). --- ## Eligibility - **General:** Open to international scholars and Portuguese nationals. - **For non-Portuguese applicants:** Must be an AIA member at the graduate or professional level. U.S. or Canadian applicants without a doctorate must provide graduate transcripts. - **For Portuguese applicants:** AIA membership not required at application, but must be obtained if selected (membership cost may be included in the budget). Graduate students must be enrolled in or accepted to a U.S. institution and provide proof of authorization to study in the US. All Portuguese applicants must provide proof of citizenship (passport). - **Other restrictions:** Current AIA officers, staff, Fellowship Committee members, and their immediate families are not eligible. --- ## Application Process - **Submission:** Electronic submission strongly preferred; applicants must log in or create an account to access the application form. - **Materials required:** - Application form (with personal and project information) - Curriculum Vitae or resume - Two letters of reference (submitted electronically) - Project proposal (max 1,000 words) - 200-word abstract - Selected bibliography (max 1 page) - Detailed budget and list of other financial resources - Itinerary of planned research activities - Graduate transcripts (for U.S./Canadian applicants without a doctorate and for Portuguese students at U.S. institutions) - Proof of Portuguese citizenship (for Portuguese applicants) - **Format:** All documents must be in English, double-spaced, 12-point font, with page numbers and applicant’s name. - **Deadline:** All materials, including references and transcripts, must be received by the anticipated deadline. - **Reporting:** Recipients must submit a final report within 30 days of fellowship completion.
