Description

The National Science Foundation’s Arctic Sciences Section, within the Office of Polar Programs in the Geosciences Directorate, supports disciplinary, multidisciplinary, and convergence research about the Arctic and its connections with lower latitudes. The program seeks fundamental, process-level, and systems-level understanding of the Arctic’s rapidly changing natural environment and social and cultural systems, including research that improves the capacity to project future change.

Supported work includes field observations, process studies, modeling, synthesis, observing networks, cyberinfrastructure, and research coordination. Research on processes relevant to social and environmental change is of special interest. The scientific scope aligns with, but is not limited to, the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee’s five-year plan. NSF may co-review and co-fund proposals with other programs and federal or international partners, and provides logistical infrastructure and field support.
