Administered by Pomona College under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS), the Graves Awards recognize outstanding teaching by early-career faculty in the humanities and interpretive social sciences. The biennial competition is limited to faculty at eligible, privately endowed liberal arts colleges in California, Oregon, and Washington.
Awards support experiences that can deepen recipients’ future teaching and professional work, including reading, study, travel, conferences, and writing. Proposals should explain specifically how the planned experience will enhance teaching. Reviewers consider demonstrated classroom accomplishment alongside the proposal’s potential for professional development, its attention to the applicant’s opportunities and aspirations, and its feasibility.
