Description
Art in State Buildings is administered by the Vermont Arts Council in partnership with the Vermont Department of Buildings and General Services. It commissions original artwork for state-owned buildings and public spaces undergoing new construction or renovation, including additions. The program aims to improve the character of public buildings, enrich employees’ workplaces, and contribute to Vermont’s cultural, aesthetic, and economic vitality.
Commissions emphasize site-specific work developed through collaboration with an Art Selection Committee and community input. Each call identifies goals reflecting the facility, its users, or the surrounding community. The program welcomes visual artistic expression across media and seeks permanent work that combines artistic quality with durability and minimal maintenance. Early artist involvement in building design is a program goal, allowing artwork to be integrated into architecture and site planning.
