Established in 2017, the African Studies Association’s Advocacy Travel Grant provides travel subsidies for members attending federal advocacy events in Washington, DC each spring. The program helps bring African Studies perspectives to Capitol Hill as representatives make funding decisions affecting international education, the humanities, social sciences, and higher education. It supports advocacy participation rather than research projects directly.
ASA highlights advocacy events organized by NAFSA Association of International Educators, the Consortium of Social Science Associations (COSSA), the National Humanities Alliance (NHA), and the Coalition for International Education. These events connect participants with congressional offices and help them make the case for federal support of their fields. Applicants select the event they are best suited to attend.
