Description
The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) presents this award to an outstanding scientist with a sustained commitment to breaking down local or systemic barriers facing scientists and students from historically marginalized or excluded groups. It recognizes efforts to encourage these scientists to enter the scientific enterprise, effective mentorship of those already within it, or both. The award honors sustained contributions to access and mentorship rather than supporting a specified research project.
The award is named for Ruth Kirschstein, a pathologist and the first woman appointed director of a National Institutes of Health institute. She championed neglected causes, including research on the emerging AIDS epidemic. ASBMB’s Maximizing Access Committee selects the recipient, who presents a lecture at the society’s annual meeting.
