The American Society of Primatologists (ASP), through its Conservation Committee, supports research and education projects with a clear primate conservation purpose. The program has funded conservation work since 1989 and accepts both standalone projects and future portions of larger, long-term efforts. Supported work includes community-based education, research on habitat loss and fragmentation, and monitoring that informs conservation action.
Projects may address endangered or non-endangered primates: conservation contribution, rather than threatened status alone, determines fit. A census must explain how its results will be analyzed and used to benefit conservation. ASP especially encourages applicants from primate habitat countries. Its assessment of past grants highlighted local support, sustained field research, clearly defined monitoring and evaluation, evaluation built into project design, and sharing both successes and failures.
