Funding Amounts: $12,000 annually across several awards; maximum request of $5,000 per proposal
Summary: Supports direct research costs for sociological studies of women in religion and intersections of religion with gender or sexualities.
Key Information: Applicants must be ASR members and maintain membership through the grant period; an approved research office must administer funds.
The Association for the Sociology of Religion (ASR) runs this annual competition to support promising sociological research on women in religion, religion and gender, or religion and sexualities. Dissertation research and postdoctoral research by junior and senior scholars qualify. Scholars pursuing or holding a Ph.D. in a range of disciplines may apply, but the proposed work must be sociological in nature.
The program concentrates funding on the practical costs of conducting research, including research travel, assistants, transcription, and specialized software. It supports research rather than institutional overhead or investigator compensation. Funded work is expected to produce a final research report and a paper presenting the study’s results at an ASR conference.
