The Paul Mellon Centre’s Author Grants help individuals bring advanced research in British art into publication through monographs, edited collections, catalogues and articles. The programme supports the dissemination of research rather than the writing or research process itself. Funding covers publication-related expenses, including images, publisher subventions, external contributors and translation of original materials.

Publications must demonstrate a contribution to the wider field of British art, visual culture or architecture. The Centre supports research from the medieval period to the present, including global histories and contexts, with a clear historical and critical dimension. Its priorities include rigorous and original scholarship, lasting scholarly contributions, timely projects, previously unsupported geographical or cultural contexts, and work that includes underrepresented voices or reaches broader audiences.
