    Description

The Dorothy M. and Earl S. Hoffman Award is administered by the American Vacuum Society (AVS) to recognize and encourage excellence in continuing graduate studies in sciences and technologies of interest to the society. Selection centers on excellence in research and academic record, rather than a particular research topic or project theme. AVS's interests encompass materials, interfaces, and processing, including surface science, thin films, plasma science, nanoscale science, electronic materials, vacuum technology, and biomaterial interfaces.

The Hoffman Award is one of eight AVS National Student Awards. Following committee review and finalist interviews, one of the top students selected for those eight awards receives the Hoffman Award. The recognition combines a cash award and certificate with reimbursed travel support to attend the AVS International Symposium.
