Description
The Florida Department of Environmental Protection administers the Beaches Funding Program through its Beach Management Funding Assistance Program. It supports local governments planning and implementing beach and inlet management projects along the Gulf of America, Atlantic Ocean and Straits of Florida. The program aims to protect upland structures and infrastructure, conserve critical habitat for threatened and endangered species, maintain recreational opportunities, and support tourism-dependent local economies.
Supported work includes beach restoration and nourishment, dune restoration, project design and engineering studies, environmental studies and monitoring, inlet management planning, and inlet sand transfer. Beach and inlet protection and other erosion-prevention activities consistent with the adopted Strategic Beach Management Plan are also eligible. The program forms part of Florida’s comprehensive beach management planning effort established in 1986.
