Description
The Bell Burnell Graduate Scholarship Fund supports full- and part-time graduates pursuing a doctorate in physics who belong to groups currently underrepresented in the field. Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and the Institute of Physics (IOP) established the fund to broaden participation in doctoral research, using Bell Burnell’s £2.3 million Breakthrough Prize donation.
The IOP administers the fund, and a panel assesses eligible applications and selects awardees. Awards either contribute to the costs of a doctoral programme alongside host-institution funding or cover additional costs needed to complete an already fully funded PhD. Students receive funding through their host university or institution, not directly from the IOP.
