The Association of Field Ornithologists (AFO) awards Bergstrom Grants to support question-driven research and other projects that add to knowledge of birds living under natural conditions. The program serves Bachelor’s and Master’s degree candidates and individuals outside academia based in the United States or Canada, while allowing study locations worldwide. It emphasizes smaller, focused projects that can be completed with a Bergstrom grant alone or alongside other small grants and institutional support.
Funded work has explored bird song and communication, nesting and parental care, migration and movement, habitat use, survival, and responses to pollution, temperature, and habitat change. Observational research is eligible when designed to answer specific questions and provide new information. The program honors E. Alexander Bergstrom, a former association vice-president and editor of Bird-Banding for 21 years.
