The Beth B. Hess Memorial Dissertation Scholarship is administered by Sociologists for Women in Society, with support from the Society for the Study of Social Problems (SSSP) and the American Sociological Association (ASA). It supports advanced sociology Ph.D. students completing their dissertations, especially those in their final year who have completed data collection and reached the final writing stage.
The scholarship honors feminist sociologist Beth Hess, whose work on aging treated older people’s difficulties as problems in the social order that could be confronted and changed. Selection priorities include research or activism addressing social inequality, social justice, or social problems, particularly gender or gerontology; commitment to teaching historically marginalized students; community service and mentoring; and high-quality research and writing.
