Description
The Bioinformatics and Biological Resources Fund is run by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), part of UKRI. It supports implementation, improvement and consolidation of community resources, including databases, bioinformatics software, culture and germplasm collections, mutant lines, DNA samples and genetic libraries. Resources must address significant demand or support an established bioscience user base.
The emphasis is shared infrastructure rather than answering specific research questions or generating new datasets. Priorities include sustainable provision of high-quality biological data and materials, FAIR data sharing, AI and machine-learning readiness, and reproducible research through consistent biological standards. Resources with significant UK demand and impact fit better than internationally focused resources with only a small UK user base.
