Description
The Birgit Baldwin Fellowship, administered by the Medieval Academy of America, supports graduate students at North American universities researching and writing significant Ph.D. dissertations in French medieval history. It funds work on any subject in this field that can be realized only through sustained research in the archives and libraries of France. The fellowship helps defray research and living expenses for concentrated dissertation work equivalent to an academic year of study.
Established in 2004 by John W. Baldwin and Jenny Jochens in memory of their daughter Birgit, the fellowship is endowed through her family’s generosity. Supported research has addressed cathedral construction, monasteries, queenship, liturgical manuscripts, guild organization, urban life, and religious culture, reflecting the breadth of historical inquiry within its archival and library-based focus.
