Description
Administered by the American Association of Geographers (AAG), this annual award supports scientific research in human-environmental science. It emphasizes rigorous investigations with geographical or related motivation, particularly research drawing on fieldwork and mixed or emerging methods. Although designed primarily to stimulate system-oriented investigations within geography, the award welcomes doctoral research across disciplinary boundaries.
The award honors B. L. Turner II’s contributions to understanding human-environmental interactions, land systems, sustainability, and socio-environmental vulnerability, alongside his legacy of collaborative mentorship. Supported research must contribute to problem solving and advance theory and/or methods relevant to human-environment systems. In addition to financial support, recipients receive mentorship from one of Turner’s mentees, a past awardee, or a scholar selected by the Award Trustees.
