Established in 2017, the Bob Williams Research Grant supports an outstanding proposal exploring the history of information science and technology. The Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) administers the award through its Awards & Honors Committee and presents it at the ASIS&T Annual Meeting. The program uses a broad definition of information science, encompassing communication activities and the management, organization, retrieval, representation, and use of information.
The grant emphasizes research whose central question contributes to the field’s history and has societal, scientific, or technical significance. It also values usefulness to practicing information professionals, including applicability, timeliness, scope, and problem-solving value. Proposals are assessed for originality, scientific and professional quality, connections to prior scholarship, and clear, well-organized, jargon-free presentation.
