Description
The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) runs the Brownfields Assistance Program with funding from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). It supports work at abandoned or underused Arizona properties where actual or perceived contamination complicates reuse. Eligible work described by ADEQ includes Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, asbestos and lead-based paint surveys, and asbestos and lead-based paint abatements.
The program aims to resolve environmental concerns so blighted sites can be cleaned up and returned to active use. Brownfields may be affected by hazardous substances, petroleum, or past mining. Redevelopment can reduce environmental hazards and turn sites into uses such as neighborhood parks, commercial areas, or retail spaces.
