The Brownfields Voluntary Cleanup Program supports parties not responsible for contamination in assessing and cleaning up South Carolina properties so they can be safely redeveloped or reused.

Description
The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) administers the Brownfields Voluntary Cleanup Program for properties whose redevelopment or reuse may be complicated by hazardous substances, pollutants, or contaminants. It provides a pathway for environmental investigation, cleanup planning, remediation, and liability protection for eligible Non-Responsible Parties. Potential sites include former textile mills, service stations, landfills, dry cleaners, and industrial facilities.
SCDES works with local governments, developers, community leaders, and state and federal partners to return underused properties to productive use. Brownfields redevelopment can address environmental hazards while supporting jobs, private investment, parks, workforce housing, and the revitalization of distressed or rural communities.
