    The Buzas Award for Travel to the Cushman Collection supports graduate students and professional researchers studying foraminifera who wish to use the Smithsonian Institution’s collection and associated facilities in Washington, D.C. Administered by the Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research, the award supports visits to the Department of Paleobiology at the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum, emphasizing the importance of verifying taxonomy in foraminiferal research.

    Dr. Martin A. Buzas and his family established the award in 2017, and the first award was made in 2018. Buzas was a Smithsonian curator from 1963 to 2022 and a past Director and President of the Foundation. His research focused on understanding the distribution of organisms across small and large scales of space and time.
