Description
The Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program (SCIP) supports efforts to prevent or reduce crime and violence, particularly gun violence and the risk factors that can lead to it. South Carolina’s Office of Highway Safety and Justice Programs (OHSJP) administers the program, authorized by the Bipartisan Safer Communities Supplemental Appropriations Act of 2022. A State Crisis Intervention Advisory Board guides the state’s funding priorities.
Funding supports specialized court-based programs, including drug, mental health, and veterans treatment courts, and behavioral health deflection for people at risk to themselves or others. Eligible activities include threat assessment, crisis response services, peer support, and law enforcement-based programs, training, and technology. Youth gun violence prevention initiatives aligned with these priorities are encouraged. Funds support the personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual services, training, technical assistance, and information systems needed to implement an actual program.
