The Calvin Institute of Christian Worship’s Vital Worship, Vital Preaching Grants for Teacher-Scholars support year-long research connecting Christian worship with other academic disciplines. Made possible through support from Lilly Endowment Inc., the program aims to strengthen Christian public worship and nurture congregations and worshiping communities in the United States and Canada.
Projects may draw on the liberal arts, sciences, or theological education. Topics include prayer, preaching, music, architecture, visual arts, media, baptism, communion, and connections between worship and pastoral care, social witness, evangelism, or mission. Research can explore economic, psychological, sociological, historical, theological, cultural, or technological dimensions of worship. The program emphasizes engagement with a particular worshiping community and collaboration with church leaders or members as partners in peer learning.
