Description
Established by the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Carbon Reduction Program funds projects designed to reduce transportation emissions, defined as carbon dioxide emissions from on-road highway sources. In Washington, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) allocates funds to metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), which prioritize and select projects aligned with regional priorities. A separate statewide share is allocated to WSDOT projects.
Eligible project types include replacing street lighting and traffic control devices with energy-efficient alternatives, transportation alternatives, and public transportation projects. Washington’s Transportation Carbon Reduction Strategy helps WSDOT and MPOs identify and prioritize investments suited to the state’s context.
