Key Information: Fellows must live in the Sacramento area and commit to the full 12-month program.
The California Council on Science & Technology (CCST), a nonpartisan nonprofit, recruits and trains doctoral-level scientists, social scientists, and engineers for a year of public service in Sacramento. Fellows work in the California State Legislature, state agencies, or Offices of the Governor, bringing scientific perspectives into policy discussions while gaining practical experience in public policy and leadership. Issues include AI governance, renewable energy, carbon emissions, drought and water supply, health, and environmental protection.
Fellows research complex issues, interpret data, and take on the responsibilities of full-time policy staff. The program begins with a three- to four-week policy orientation and continues with professional development seminars, mentorship, networking, and career guidance. Placements may involve subjects outside a fellow’s doctoral specialty.
