Summary: Supports Delta-based decontamination control sites to prevent the spread of golden mussel.
The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) offers this grant opportunity to support Delta-based decontamination control sites aimed at preventing the spread of golden mussel. CDFW’s Invasive Species Program hosts the grant workshop and works to prevent introductions, respond to detections, and limit the spread of established invasive species in California.
Golden mussel was first detected in North America in October 2024. Similar in appearance and impacts to quagga and zebra mussels, it can establish in waters with wider temperature and salinity ranges. Its spread threatens native and game fish through competition for food and can contribute to harmful, fish-killing algal blooms. It can also disrupt recreation and cause costly damage to boats, water infrastructure, and hydroelectric facilities, with reduced water flow affecting food production, water delivery, and flood control.
