Description
The German Research Foundation (DFG) funds Centres for Advanced Studies in the Humanities and Social Sciences as research settings tailored to these disciplines. Experienced, well-established researchers collaborate at one location to advance a broadly defined topic rooted in the host site's interests and strengths. The topic should provide a framework for integrating individual research ideas. There is no prescribed thematic orientation, and interdisciplinary work is not required.
Centres combine intensive independent research, generally by two to three responsible researchers, with a fellows programme welcoming visiting researchers from Germany and abroad. Fellows may stay for up to two years and are expected to maintain links afterward. Social sciences proposals are explicitly permitted when the topic, collaborative methods and qualified personnel are suitable for advancing the research. Centres use fellowship-based collaboration rather than a network of individual projects.
