The Charles E. Peterson Fellowship supports relevant, timely, and substantive research on American architecture and building technology before 1860. Administered by The Athenaeum of Philadelphia, the fellowship draws on a trust fund endowed by Charles E. Peterson, FAIA, his colleagues, and his friends. Its charitable and educational purposes reflect Peterson’s dedication to studying, recording, and preserving early American architecture and building technology, and to teaching conservation skills in American schools of architecture.
The fellowship welcomes work across disciplines that advances these objectives. Research may address conservation, preservation, artisanal and material culture, landscape architecture, traditional building technologies, or planning. Reflecting Peterson’s belief that research leads to results, priority is given to projects with plans to disseminate findings in public and permanent ways.
