The award, established in 2022 by the Bates family, honors Charles Bates and the commitment to equality and social justice. It is presented annually by the American Physiological Society (APS) to recognize an outstanding abstract submitted to the American Physiology Summit by a scientist who identifies as LGBTQ+ or is a demonstrated ally of the LGBTQ+ community. The recipient receives a $1,000 honorarium and complimentary early registration to attend the Summit, where the award is presented.
