Description
Administered by the American Physiological Society (APS), the Charlie Bates Research Award recognizes an outstanding abstract submitted to the American Physiology Summit by a scientist who identifies as LGBTQ+ or is a demonstrated ally of the LGBTQ+ community. The Bates family established the award in 2022 to honor their son, Charles Bates, reflecting their commitment to equality, inclusion and social justice in the scientific community.
The award brings recognition of scientific work together with recognition of support for LGBTQ+ people. APS describes demonstrated allyship as consistent, meaningful support through action, advocacy and inclusive practices. Examples include research benefiting the LGBTQ+ community, mentoring LGBTQ+ scientists, creating affirming environments, promoting equality and challenging discrimination.
