    Description

The Cooperative Institute for Great Lakes Research (CIGLR) funds and hosts summits and working groups that bring together experts from Great Lakes universities, NGOs, government agencies, and businesses. These gatherings identify pressing research and management needs, advance Great Lakes science, and expand NOAA’s regional research capacity. CIGLR supports three to five gatherings annually, centered on its research themes.

Summits convene 20–30 invited experts for two to three days to assess existing knowledge and recommend future directions on problems spanning decades. Working groups convene 8–12 experts for up to one week to make detailed progress on narrower issues with solutions over months to years. Each gathering is expected to produce participant-co-designed written products, such as a peer-reviewed publication, white paper, or policy brief.
