Description
The Clinical Medical Genetics Residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is a rigorous two-year program (with an optional third year for advanced specialization) designed to train physicians in all aspects of clinical medical genetics. Residents gain extensive, hands-on experience with both pediatric and adult patients, including prenatal cases, and are exposed to a wide range of genetic disorders—monogenic, chromosomal, mitochondrial, multifactorial, and teratogenic. The curriculum includes rotations through cytogenetics, biochemical, and molecular laboratories, emphasizing the applications and limitations of laboratory testing in genetic diagnosis. Residents work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including board-certified geneticists, counselors, laboratory directors, nutritionists, and allied health professionals, preparing them for board certification in clinical genetics and, optionally, further specialization in biochemical genetics or laboratory genetics and genomics.
