Description
The German Research Foundation (DFG) funds Clinical Research Units to bring researchers with outstanding track records together around a defined clinical research task. The programme supports disease- or patient-oriented translational research, including investigation of disease mechanisms and incorporation of clinical material where appropriate. Collaboration should deliver results that individual grants alone could not achieve and establish long-term scientific working groups within clinical institutions.
The programme also strengthens research-oriented structures within university hospitals, develops departments of medicine’s scientific profiles, and builds clinical research training structures. It encourages closer collaboration between clinicians and scientists in the foundational disciplines of medicine. Units pursue tailored measures supporting early-career researchers, equity and diversity, with targeted career support for clinician scientists and natural scientists in medical research.
