COA Grants to Malacology support graduate students and early-career researchers studying recent or fossil mollusks through field, laboratory, and related projects that answer molluscan research questions.
Funder: Conchologists of America
Due Dates: February 28, 2027 (Annual application deadline)
Funding Amounts: Individual grants generally range from $1,000 to $2,500; smaller requests are accepted
Summary: Supports field and laboratory research on recent or fossil mollusks and other molluscan-related projects across malacological disciplines.
Key Information: Projects must be self-contained, with requested funds and any secured funding sufficient to answer the research question.
Conchologists of America (COA) has supported research in malacology through its academic grants program since June 1985. The program funds field and laboratory studies of recent or fossil mollusks, as well as other molluscan-related projects. It covers disciplines from autecology to zoogeography, including paleontology. Research must center on mollusks; parasite studies, for example, should emphasize the molluscan side of the interaction.
Projects may form part of a larger research effort, but the proposed work must independently answer its stated question with the funding available. Applications are reviewed by an Academic Grants Committee of three professional malacologists appointed by the program chair. Awards go mainly to graduate students and early-career researchers, and recipients share results through a required project summary and accounts for COA’s magazine, American Conchologist.
