Description
Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) supports collaborative, multidisciplinary ocean research by providing investigators and teams with free access to R/V Falkor (too) and its scientific capabilities. The program advances ocean discovery, intelligent observation, technological development, open information sharing, and public engagement. Research must fit the vessel’s planned operating regions and years.
SOI’s priorities span seafloor mapping, biodiversity, ocean health, physical ocean processes, deep-ocean exploration, emerging technologies, and human impacts. Supported topics include carbon and nutrient cycles, deoxygenation, microplastics, hydrothermal vents, deep-sea life, robotics, and intelligent data use. SOI strongly encourages meaningful participation by communities in operating regions throughout research planning, execution, outreach, and data sharing.
